On going out
Beautiful People – Chris Brown (<< this has been in my head all week. I know Chris Brown is a skeez, but I enjoy his music)
Since we’re in college I know it’s unrealistic to have a home cooked dinner every night – with classes, work, studying, rehearsals, social time, etc. – so let’s talk going out to eat.
BARS:
Obviously, when you go to a bar, if you get there early enough you can get some food. Most bars offer some sort of special that generally changes every day. These are the meals to plan ahead for; for instance, if you want a bacon cheeseburger, and you know that on Wednesday your favorite bar has it on special for $5 with fries, then obviously you go then instead of going any other day and spending $8.99 for the same meal. This isn’t rocket science.
FAST FOOD:
I shouldn’t even be giving this a section because fast food, while occasionally delicious, is terrible to be eating regularly – still there are things that need to be said. Dollar menus are where to order from. Generally they have very close, if not the same food as the full menu, just sold a la carte. Honestly, most fast food places make a “variety” of food, but I find it all tastes the same.
New Directions
Little Lion Man – Mumford & Sons
So I’ve been thinking – this blog has become kind of a dead zone for me and I’ve been trying to figure out why. When I started it, I had this grand idea to show you all recipes that were budget conscious, healthy, and easy enough to make that someone with no cooking background can make them, i.e. a college student. Obviously, I lost that goal somewhere along the way. So its time for a revamp.
From now on, this will be a place where I’ll post tips and quick ideas to help those of you who are always on the go. Classes, meetings, rehearsals, and of course a social life all demand a quick way to keep healthy both with your food and your spending habits. Some days there will be recipes, other days, just a few quick tips.
To start things off, I’m going to (regrettably) take a page from Rachael Ray’s book. (Nothing against Rachael Ray, I’m just not her biggest fan.) Her new show on Cooking Channel, Week in a Day, has got me thinking about making the week’s meals in advance. Originally, I thought this idea was nasty, because who would want to eat something on Friday that was made on Sunday? Gross. However, after thinking about it, whatever you make doesn’t have to be fully cooked and reheated as the week goes on, but merely assembled and then cooked when you want it. You are still able to get a freshly cooked meal every night without having to deal with the hassle of having to come over after a long day, stand chopping vegetables for 20 minutes, only to get a mediocre meal that you half-assed your way through. When I get home and have to actually make something, I’m more apt to just pick up the phone (or more realistically go on Campusfood.com) and order something not healthy and expensive. It’s not a good situation. Hopefully this ends up being a good solution that both helps me with my bad habits, and can give you some good advice for saving money, time, and most importantly help you eat healthier than the average college student.
Time to Breathe
Oh hayyyy.
I’ve been neglecting this poor site not out of want, but more because I haven’t really had a chance to get anything made or written about or photographed in the past month or so. See, there was the last round of exams, then finals, then moving home and unpacking, and then starting a 42.5 hour a week job. Life has been busy. As it is, I’m writing this gem while my nieces who I’m currently babysitting, are watching Barbie Thumbelina in thw other room with one of my old roommates (thanks, Amy!!). It’s an enthralling tale of how a stereotypical doll, came to life, and became thum…bel..ina. Yeah, I don’t get it either.
Please hang with me though!! Once I get back into the swing of things, there will be more to come!! I know a fwe of you just discovered he site, and this is no way to make a first impression. You can always check back in the archives for more recipes and feel free to e-mail me anything you want to see made!! I know some of you are picky eaters (which I, thankfully, am not) so if you have any suggestions, I am always willing to listen.
) Happy Thuesday!!
PSA : For all the shy kids
Have you ever written a paper, or a draft for a really important project, turned it in, and gotten back a not so happy grade and absolutely no marks, notes or comments on the pages?? If this has happened to you, and you were upset, then please share in my pain. No feedback, is much worse than negative feedback, I think. I like comments, good or bad!! I like input from my readers, whether they’re professors, friends, or random people on the internet; I appreciate hearing what you all (yes, you, the one reading this) think about what I do.
See, WordPress has this amazing Stats feature that let’s me see how many of you all view my pages, which pages and posts you view, and where you came from. I know you’re all there!! I know it may be someones prerogative to just read and not comment, but like any writer, artist, or performer, notes and critiques – good or bad – are beneficial. So please, comment your little hearts out!!
Also, check out the page links in the upper right hand corner of the page if you haven’t already!! I do take requests (unless they’re ridiculous, like a croquembouche. I’m in college, not French pastry school, sorry folks) so feel free to comment your requests, or e-mail them!! Thanks for reading!!
Hope you all are enjoying this weather as much as I am, even though it’s raining at the moment.
My brother is the best!!
If you follow me on twitter (twitter.com/saxypants), you’ll know that I’ve been having lots of headaches learning wordpress and trying to get the format down just the way I want it. Well, lucky for me today while I was studying, my brother and his fiancee walked in and surprised me. I asked him to take a look at the site, and WHAM, he fixed it. Now the Recipes archive has HTML bookmarks so things are easier to find than ever (and once I get more content you won’t have to go sifting through masses of posts to find that ever elusive pumpkin bread recipe). From someone who is electronically challenged (and got a C in Computer Science) all I have to say is, thanks Jeff!! If you ever want to guest post, just lemme know!!
Pure Awesome.
